Check this out, it explains the goals of the well funded and organized corporate backed right wing attack on public education and their communistic like desire to control access to education and the minds of the public.http://www.commonwealinstitute.org/cw/files/Responding_Ed_Report%20from%20CI%20website_0.pdf

The only kind of education I will ever support whether public, private or homeschool is education like I had where I was taught to study both sides of issues by teachers that did not force their beliefs on me and encouraged me to make up my own mind. I can not support the kind of homeschooling or any education where parents or teachers deliberately demonize individual thoughts and ideas and/or restricts and purposesly designs educational material to brainwash children to only their own ideology

I recently had the opportunity to speak with a young girl whose ultra-conservative parents homeschool. Her goal in life at 14 years old is to bulid a one room cabin on her parents property and live without electricity, with an outhouse and no running water so that she will not have any bills and grow her own food as much as possible.  So now we have parents teaching their children to want thirld world lives.

BTW, public school must have really brainwashed me, because I believe taking care of our natural resources and our land is important, controlling pollution is important, promoting opportunties for improvements and advancement for everyone by working together as a people in one great country (when and how it is possible) , I think uniform laws throughout our country and unity is what makes us a strong country, and that we should support liberty and freedom by a live and let live attitude regarding personal beliefs and private lives as long as it does not involve abuse and cruelty. . But frankly, I intend to keep that brainwashing because I like me as I am with those beliefs.

I will say one thing Barb, the thought of having Pope Santorum as the republican nominee has me sleeping soundly at night. >>Go Rick...We pick Rick......AND WHERE DO I SEND MY CHECK LOL >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Anyhow i totally agree with your thoughts on this subject Barb. The GOP has completely lost its mind. never thought i'd hear a republican candidate, (or any candidate for that matter) campaigning against higher education, but it fits in perfectly with the theocratic mind of thinking. keep them ignorant so they don't stray....sad, very sad.

Oh ,i alomost forgot.....as far as home schooling. Ther are a minority of parents who are pretty big on homeschooling, fine, just as long as they can become certified just as teachers have to be. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>I've done some, not much reading on this issue, and from what i've been able to surmise, generally its a bad idea and increases the possibility that these homeschooleys will have a more dificult time finding their way later on in life in a society. Especially if and as i suspect that many homeschooled kids are being given a restricted, filtered, and censored education. (((Pebbles really didn't have a pet dinosaur....)))

Barbara...Your comment floors me...You totally missed her point...She is only 14 and instead of daydreaming about her next wasteful consumer trip to the mall to buy crap she does need,,,this girl is thinking of being self sufficient, living with nature, wasting nothing...she obviously also enjoys a strong relationship with her parents. I am very impressed with this girl and her parents! Many Americans live "third world lives" as you say, by choice. The Quakers, Mennonites and lots of Hippies...just to mention a few...

Robert you can live with nature, waste nothing and still plan on going to college with a desire to be capable of  independence and have a goal of acquiring the ability to earn enough to pay for healthcare and retirement in your old age instead of permanent reliance on your parents or dying because you can't afford healthcare, etc. and still be close too and respect your parents. As a matter of fact there is much you can learn about living with nature by going to college. Our children will more and more be competing with very well educated young people from other countries let alone other well educated young people in our own country for all the good paying jobs or to run businesses of their own.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>..Ok Barbara...in this reply you clearly demonstrate that I must not be making my point clear....Your talking of having a desire to be capable of going to college to pay for healthcare and retirement and then you go on to talk about our children Having to compete for all the good jobs or to run their own businesses....>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>....You place no Value for the way of life these people represent...They do not intend or want to "Compete" that is the whole point...They see no value in being part of the rat race....many believe Healthcare for profit is immoral...

Re: Barb, you need to check this out

you say a mind is a terrible thing to waste.......but that assumes that since this child is home schooled or wants to live a minimalist lifestyle that she won't stay or become educated. Many of our greatest minds were mostly self taught in their respective fields. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>And you see the statement...the mind is a terrible thing to waste...This statement implies that unless a person conforms to the normal machine man routine of 8-5...Work Buy, Work Buy routine that they are wasting their lives....far from it...in a sense these people are the most patriotic of all...willing to live by example on how to live in harmony with nature...their entire lifestyle is built around self sufficiency ...Stuff does not make you happy or satisfied or proud at least not in the long term. If there is an afterlife our stuff does not go with us...it stays here...the only thing we know would be there are other people and likely other animals and or life...things that were alive...stuff is not alive...Pets are not stuff...though many treat them as such they are not stuff...>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>being an Okie I know quite a few families that live this sort of lifestyle....Most of the people that I have known doing this are quite Religious, Christians...and a few Hippies, but mostly Christians...I have to say that I have been quite surprised by how well educated their children are...Knowledgeable and able to apply that knowledge with critical thinking...religion aside of course...well mannered....fiercely independent...>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> My point is that it is not for us to decide what is right for others...Just because anothers lifestyle does not appeal to us does not mean it has no value or that they are wasting their lives....I am certain that most of the folks that I have known the are living like this definitely think we are wasting our lives playing this Keep up with the jones consumerist Rush, Rush Rush lifestyle just to wear prettier clotehes and drive fancy cars and live in houses 4 times bigger than we need and spending 3 hours a day driving back and forth to some crappy job we don't even like for another 8 hours making crappy stuff nobody needs...cause as they demonstrate you can really get by and be Happy on very little...And they have an abudance of quality time with their families...something most of us...only dream of....

Robert, what bothers the leftists most about home-schooling is the fact that the kids are not part of the indoctrination system they are so fond of pushing and supporting....Just look, you can almost see seti's eyes bleeding at the thought of a little mind a liberal teacher did not get to warp.

Re: Barb, you need to check this out

The only mind warping I have seen is from homeschooling parents that are fanatic about sensoring what their children are exposed to for fear that they might agree with something other than ultra conservative ideology, teaching thier kids anti-government propaganda yet living on EITC checks and HHS government paid hospital healthcare when someone get's a broken bone, etc.e tc.

Does the El Paso Fundamentalists commune ring a bell Iceman, there are a rather large number of families in Texas that are offshoots of that same group. As far as naming names you can go whistle Dixie cause I don't need to prove what so many already know.

What so many already know!! Funny coming from a Marxist!! So many know the steal from the rich and hand to the entitlement crowd that you spew constantly is a failure every time tried, yet that never bothers you and your class envy mantra.

The majority of people that home school and the way they live just does not make good TV...but the nutty religious freaks...yeah...but Barb this America...We are supposed to be free to practice what ever religion we choose...And if parents want to sensor their children that is their own business...Short of physical abuse it is none of your business what TV or Media they use or what Religion they practice...or if they are freaks and sleep all day and then work at night, the whole family including the children...making teddy bears...It is simply not for us to decide how someone else should live or raise their children...as long as the children are not in physical danger...it is not our business...besides I still say you just Stereo typing Home Schoolers...It is likely with Technology conventional schooling will probably cease to exist...

Re: Barb, you need to check this out

RB I agree it is not our business and I don't interfere and never plan to as far as that goes if parents want to brainwash their children and not allow them to be exposed to different political ideologies as long as their is no physical abuse, but on the same line I don't support this, and never will, because it is not what I approve of, and THIS IS AMERICA SO I HAVE THE RIGHT TO STATE MY OPINION ON THIS ISSUE AND LEND MY SUPPORT OR NOT WHERE I SEE FIT, JUST AS MUCH AS PARENTS HAVE THE RIGHT TO SENSOR THIER CHILDREN FROM HEARING MY OPINION. LOL.================ I lend my support and approval to what I prefer which is education where children are exposed to differing ideologies and allowed to make up thier own minds and I think encouraging children to seek higher education and independence is a good thing and much better than encouraging them to live third world lives . I support going forwards not going backwards. We have parents homeschooling that flunked out of school themselves and don't have a high school diploma and are not capable of passing a test to even get a GED themselves and can't even read a tape measure among many many other things, and no one can convince me that they are able to offer their children as good an education as several different teachers each teaching different subjects they specialize in that all went to college to learn to teach================== I will and do support homeschooling where parents are qualified and capable of teaching and want to teach and teaching a well rounded education is their motive and often they do better jobs teaching than what children would get anywhere else but these parents usually are not homeschooling just so that they can brainwash their kids to their own political ideology and they do support thier children going to college and being independent adults someday.
